What the heck is a SlingBox? Warning! Using a SlingBox may be against the Terms of Service (TOS) with both Verizon and Sprint and can get your EVDO account cancelled. There are many reports of users getting cancelled because of the massive amounts of bandwidth that are required for one individual to watch a SlingBox. Since, EVDO is a shared bandwidth technology, it can impact other users. Search on EVDOforums for user reports and more information. Also, read this for more info. It is a $250 box that hooks up to your TV, Cable Box or Tivo and hooks up to your home internet. I bought one at Best Buy (CompUSA has them too, OR you can purchase directly from Sling Media) via The SlingViewer application, you can watch YOUR TV channels wherever YOU are located. If you hook up the SlingBox to a Tivo, you can watch your recorded programs wherever you have an internet connection, you can also watch live television on your laptop from any location. It is just like having the remote with you (no need to bring the remote though), you can even change channels, tell Tivo to record something, or anything else that you can do if you were in front of your TV. ![]() This product solves two important problems for me. The first, our family doesn't watch much TV each week, but there is one program we really enjoy, it is Survivor. Next week, we are traveling to Las Vegas to spend time with family. We happen to be traveling and will miss our show. No problem, Tivo automatically records it, but wait, we don't want to wait until we return to watch it. SlingBox saves the day. We can stream the program from our Tivo Box at our house to our laptop in the hotel room in Las Vegas. How cool is that! The second problem it solves. In my office, I don't have a TV, but sometimes, I like catching up on news or watching some late breaking story, while I am working. I really cannot justify bringing in cable to the office, since I really don't watch TV there. The SlingBox saves the day again. I can now watch the news on my laptop, or even change the channels or tell Tivo to record something, pretty cool! Here is a screen shot of what it looks like: ![]() So, of course, we are we writing about this cool new toy on EVDOinfo? That is the interesting part. It works great over EVDO. If you notice in the above picture, I am connected to the Kycoera KR1 Router, while I am watching the news. Imagine the freedom of accessing your TV/Cable/Tivo from anywhere SlingMedia only offers support for Windows XP. They are currently working on clients for Mac OS X and Pocket PCs. How cool would that be on a PocketPC? Imagine being stuck at an airport and you hand the laptop of PocketPC to the kids and let them watch one of their kid program that was pre-recorded on Tivo. Imagine, commuting to work on the train and watching your soaps or favorite night time series that you recorded, anyways, you get the idea, you have a new freedom. Related Links: |
