This article will descibe how to get the Sierra AirCard 580 to work with your PowerBook on Sprint's High Speed Wireless.

NOTE: These are instructions are for advanced users who know what they are doing only! These directions work under Mac OS 10.3.5 - 10.4.5. For those NOT familiar with the Terminal App, we offer a step by step, keystroke by keystroke version of these directions. It is a PDF that you can immediately download for $49. If you purchase your Sprint AirCard 580 from us, these directions are provided FREE of charge (we offer same prices as Sprint, even free to business customers, and WE SUPPORT MACS, we even sell Sprint Cards Pre-Activated for Mac Users - Sprint Does not).

Also, the card MUST be activated on a Windows PC before it can be used on the Mac. It is IMPOSSIBLE to currently get a Sprint card working in a PowerBook, if it has not first been activated in a PC (we offer pre-activated Sprint cards when buying from us).

We do not provide phone support, email support, iChat support for these directions if you purchased your card directly from Sprint or from from some other location - however, they are provided here free of charge.

  • Remove the Sierra AirCard 580 if it is already inserted.
  • Log in as an Administration user.
  • Open the Terminal application.
  • Go to the IOSerialFamily kernel extension PlugIns folder by executing the following command: cd /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/
  • Execute the ls command to view the directory, and you should see amongst the other plug-ins one called AppleVerizonSupport.kext and the other called AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext. If you do not see these directories, then you are probably not running Mac OS X 10.3.5 or later, as they are installed by default (you can download the Apple Drivers and then start over)
  • To enable support for the Sierra AirCard 580, we need to change the Vendor ID number in the two Info.plist files contained within the two kext's above. You can use pico, but any text editor will do.
  • Type sudo pico AppleVerizonSupport.kext/Contents/Info.plist
  • Scroll down until you see a line that says idVendor
  • In the line underneath, you should see 3901
  • Replace the number with 4505 (which is the vendor ID of the Sierra AirCard 580)
  • Scroll down until you see a line that says idProduct
  • In the line underneath, you should see 274
  • LEAVE this field alone, it should be 274 (which is the product ID of the Sierra AirCard 580)
  • Save and exit the editor
  • Repeat process for the AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext plist file
  • Rebuild the kernel extension cache by executing these two commands:
  • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
  • sudo kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions
  • Restart your Mac (you can do this from the command line with a
  • sudo shutdown -r now command)
  • Insert the Sierra AirCard 580
  • When the dialog box pops up asking you if you want to configure it, click OK
  • Click OK and it will create a new profile in your Network system preference called "AirPrime CDMA Wireless PC Card"
  • In this new profile, enter the following:
  • Service Provider = (leave this field blank)
  • Account Name = (leave this field blank)
  • Password = (leave this field blank)
  • Telephone Number: #777
  • Be sure the Verizon (PC 5220) modem script is selected
  • Be sure that wait for dialtone option is NOT CHECKED
  • Hit the Apply Now button

  • Congratulations, your Sierra AirCard 580 is now working in your PowerBook on the Sprint Network, you can now use Internet Connect (in Applications Folder) to connect.
