Apple Supports EX720, U720, USB720, V740 for Intel Macs
Apple releases a Software update that provides EVDO card support directly to Intel based Macs. The update supports the following devices:
Available on the Sprint network:
-
Novatel Wireless Merlin EX720 Express Card (EVDO Rev. A)
-
Novatel Wireless Ovation U720 USB Modem (USB Adapter, EVDO Rev. A)
Available on the Verizon network:
-
Novatel XV620 ExpressCard (EVDO Rev. 0) (this is called the Novatel V640)
-
Novatel V740 ExpressCard (EVDO Rev. A) (this device is not announced yet)
-
Novatel Wireless Ovation U720 (USB Adapter, EVDO Rev. A)
If you use VZAccess for Mac, installing Apple WWAN update will make your Mac unable to communicate with your V640 or USB720.
Available on the Cingular network:
Once the update is installed, you pop in one of the supported devices and a new menu bar appears that allows you to connect, see signal, etc. Apple originally added this support in Mac OS X 10.4.7, now they bring support for the latest EVDO Rev A Cards.
With this release, Apple is only supporting Intel Based Macs, no updates for PPC Macs. However, the good news, Verizon does have software available for PPC Macs for their USB720 and PC5750 cards.
Sprint normally sends out their devices locked and they require a Sprint Connection Manager to unlock (Windows only). A more important issue, is that if you do not upgrade your firmware, your Mobile Broadband card may fail to connect after 4/30/2007, see: Sprint EVDO Required Firmware 4/30/2007
When purchasing your Sprint Mobile Broadband device from US, we provide free Mac Support (yes, we are the Mac EVDO Experts), AND we have an option to Pre-Activate your card before shipping and this includes upgrading the firmware to the latest (so you will be OK after 4/30/2007).
