Helio Stops Offering EVDO/Wi-Fi 'Hybrid'
Helio has decided to disconnect their EVDO/Wi-fi "Hybrid" service. This service allowed users to be on the EVDO network, and when they were close to a Wi-fi hotspot, the service switched to using Wi-Fi instead. It's partnership with Boingo Wi-Fi Network allowed users access to their over 60,000 hotspots around the world.
While the service was an interesting approach to mobile broadband, it did not seem to catch on. Users were unwiling to pay the rather steep $85 monthly fee for the service. And once they were aware that there was a 160MB cap per month, EVDO service through Verizon or Sprint seemed a much better deal. Even with Verizon's 5GB monthly cap, you pay less for significantly more transfer. The disconnection of the Hybrid service will be effective May 8th, 2007. Customers who have paid in advance will recieve refunds.
Charging $85 for EVDO service that you can get in the $60 range, was most likely the problem
