Verizon Announces Sierra AirCard 595U USB EVDO Modem
Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, and Sierra Wireless (Nasdaq: SWIR - TSX: SW) today announced the availability of the Sierra Wireless AirCard® 595U USB modem for use with Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service. The 595U modem will be available in all sales channels on August 30. Designed to provide customers access to Verizon Wireless' Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A (EVDO Rev. A) network, the AirCard 595U modem is compatible with USB ports on most notebook and desktop computers. The modem can also be connected through the included docking cradle, which provides an alternative for customers without PCMCIA card slots.
Since Verizon Wireless' entire wireless broadband network operates on advanced EVDO Rev. A technology, BroadbandAccess customers using the AirCard 595U modem can expect average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps. With these speeds a customer can typically download a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds. The AirCard 595U modem comes with VZAccess Manager software, which is compatible with Windows® 2000, XP and Vista operating systems. The AirCard 595U modem also features an internal, removable battery to ensure there is always enough power support to handle peak or fringe area transmission requirements. (warning, understand the issues with batteries before purchasing. see notes below.) Pricing and Availability The AirCard 595U modem will be available for $179.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year customer agreement. * Get the 595U for $69.99 after rebate from 3GStore.com *
The 595U is not fully compatible with ANY EVDO Router. It does not work with the Kyocera KR1 (the Novatel USB720 does). The 595U works with the MB6800, but it requires an external powered USB hub, otherwise the battery dies after 90 minutes and you cannot use your modem until you charge it in a laptop. If you are in a permanent fringe area, your battery *may* not be able to charge :( ATTENTION MAC USERS. Verizon is NOT LISTING THE 595U as BEING MAC COMPATIBLE. If you order your 595U From 3Gstore.com, we have a CD that we have been shipping for Sprint 595U for Mac Compatiblity, just request our free preactivation service with your order and we will include our Mac CD (and get 3Gstore.com Support).
