Unboxing the Sierra Wireless Compass 597 USB modem for Sprint EVDO MobileBroadbandThe Sierra Wireless Compass 597 USB EVDO modem is expected to ship on Monday, April 21, 2008, but we received our first Compass 597U USB EVDO modem yesterday and have a few photos of the 'unboxing' to share with you! [ALERT] -Compass 597 USB Modem experiencing Activation Issues Here is what the actual Sprint packaging looks like:
Inside the box, you'll find the Compass 597 by itself on the top layer: ...and below the Compass 597 are a cool FlexUSB cable along with a softcase and the user's manual:
Here are all the pieces, removed from the box for you to see: The FlexUSB cable is a first.. its not like other USB cables that have shipped with similar products. The one that comes with the Compass 597 is stiff and can hold its shape, allowing you to keep the Compass up and out of the way like the 595U was able to swivel. Here's a photo of the Compass 597 on the end of the FlexUSB cable, sticking up in the air: That FlexUSb cable also came in handy when we wanted to test the Compass 597 with the Cradlepoint PHS300 in the Cradlepoint PHS300 softcase. FYI, all three Cradlepoint routers will work with the Compass 597 when it launches on the Sprint EVDO network... this will be the first time a cellular router will provide official support for a device before it even launches!
A lot of people will be wondering just how small the Compass 597 USB modem is compared to the other "small EVDO modems"... Here is a stack photo showing that the Compass truly is the smallest USB EVDO modem on the market today. From top to bottom, smallest to largest, we give you the Compass 597, the Novatel U727 and the Franklin CDU680: We're Mac freaks, and just had to see if the sleek Compass 597 would work nicely with the MacBook Air... and as we've reported in our MacBook Air article, the Compass 597 works great! Many others are also going to be wondering if the Compass has a jack to allow for external antennas... Yes it does, and we already have the proper adapter cables to allow for our complete selection of antennas! The Sierra Wireless Compass 597 USB EVDO modem is expected to ship on Monday, April 21, 2008 and Sprint will sell for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, on a 2 year contract at $59.99/mo. (See below, 3Gstore.com is selling for $19.99 after Rebates). Sprint Sierra Compass 597 USB Modem Highlights:
