PowerBook Mac OS X Directions To Use Novatel V620

Wednesday, 13 April 2005
EVDO is hot! Apple provided support for the PC 5220 EVDO card, however, Verizon is only pushing the Novatel V620 these days and the PC 5220 isn't available. This article will descibe how to get the Novatel V620 to work with your PowerBook.

July 1, 2005 UPDATE

We now have a NEW SIMPLE INSTALLER for Mac OS X that installs a new Novatel V620 driver. It is MUCH easier than the directions on this page. HOWEVER, it only works on 10.3 (NOT Tiger), and doesn't work reliably, the steps below WORK.

NOTE: These are instructions are for advanced users who know what they are doing only! These directions work under Mac OS 10.3.5 - 10.4.2. We will perform these steps remotely on your PowerBook if you purchase your Novatel V620 card from us.
For those that purchase the Novatel v620 from our sister site (Booster-Antenna.com, we can do the steps below, for you remotely at no charge.

ALSO, the card must first be activated on a Windows PC! If you are purchasing the Novatel V620 from us, there is an option to select "Mac User - Preactivate", select this and the card will come ready to use.

For users not comfortable following these technical steps, we have an installer that you can download (must register to download it). The installer basically performs all the steps for you on this page...automatically.

According to this EVDO Forum Message, the installer works fine with Tiger / Mac OS X 10.4.

You can also support EVDOinfo.com & EVDOforums.com, by purchasing your Booster Antenna's from Booster-Antenna.com or even your Novatel V620 (or others) and Verizon BroadBandAccess service. We can get you the Novatel V620 for $19.99 (after $100 rebate), the same deal costs you $30 more if you buy directly from VerizonWireless.com. There is an option for Mac Users to have your Novatel V620 activated on a Windows laptop before sending to you. Also, we have the external booster antenna for the Novatel V620.

  • Remove the Novatel V620 Card if it is already inserted.
  • Log in as an Administration user.
  • Open the Terminal application.
  • Go to the IOSerialFamily kernel extension PlugIns folder by executing the following command: cd /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/
  • Execute the ls command to view the directory, and you should see amongst the other plug-ins one called AppleVerizonSupport.kext and the other called AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext. If you do not see these directories, then you are probably not running Mac OS X 10.3.5 or later, as they are installed by default (you can download the Apple Drivers and then start over)
  • To enable support for the Novatel Wireless card, we need to change the Vendor ID number in the two Info.plist files contained within the two kext's above. You can use pico, but any text editor will do.
  • Type sudo pico AppleVerizonSupport.kext/Contents/Info.plist
  • Scroll down until you see a line that says idVendor
  • In the line underneath, you should see 3901
  • Replace the number with 5136 (which is the vendor ID of the Novatel Wireless card)
  • Scroll down until you see a line that says idProduct
  • In the line underneath, you should see 274
  • Replace the number with 4368 (which is the product ID of the Novatel Wireless card)
  • Save and exit the editor
  • Repeat process for the AppleVerizonSupportKicker.kext plist file
  • Rebuild the kernel extension cache by executing these two commands:
  • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
  • sudo kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions
  • Restart your Mac (you can do this from the command line with a
  • sudo shutdown -r now command)
  • Insert the Novatel V620 PC Card
  • When the dialog box pops up asking you if you want to configure it, click OK
  • Click OK and it will create a new profile in your Network system preference called "AirPrime CDMA Wireless PC Card"
  • In this new profile, enter the following:
  • Service Provider = Verizon
  • Account Name = xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com (replace xxx's with your Verizon Phone Number)
  • Password = vzw
  • Telephone Number: #777
  • Hit the Apply Now button

  • Congratulations, your Novatel V620 is now working in your PowerBook!

Based on the hard work of a handful of people, we were able to get the Novatel V620 working with PowerBooks under Mac OS X. You can read the EVDO Forums Thread that shows you how we got it working.
