Verizon XV6800 Gets EVDO Rev A Upgrade (And More!)

Verizon's XV6800 smartphone has only been available for about a year, but it's already getting a performance makeover. UTStarcom has released a FREE pack of upgrades on their website that will improve both the functionality of the phone and the enjoyment factor. After upgrading your phone, you'll enjoy:

  • VZ Navigator compatibility with built-in GPS
  • Support for memory cards up to 16GB
  • Threaded SMS client
  • Updated MMS client
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 OS
  • Most importantly: access to the EVDO Rev A network (the phone previously only connected to Rev 0)

The Rev A support is arguably the biggest upgrade, as that was one area where the otherwise very desirable phone was lacking. The ability to support larger capacity memory cards is a big boon as well, since the XV6800 comes with only 64MB of installed RAM.

One reminder: Changing the phone's ROM by installing these upgrades will erase ALL of the stored data, so backing up documents and contact information is imperative. Of course, data stored on a memory card will not be affected.
