Despite speculation that the 4G broadband technology LTE (which Verizon and many other carriers have chosen to adopt as their eventual 4G data service) will become available in approximately 2012, sources now say that it will likely not become commercially widespread until 2015. Major wireless consultant Andrew Seybold is operating a conference in conjunction with the CTIA conference currently taking place in San Francisco and spoke today on the future of 3G. He predicts that there is quite a bit of life left in 3G technologies like EVDO - LTE will not be usurping its place in the market any time soon. He points out that data service is not the most profitable for cell providers (voice is) and that even when the technology is ready to be deployed it will most likely be used as a hotspot in places where there is a particularly huge need for bandwidth, not so much in the private sector. Only time will tell whether Seybold is correct in his 2015 prediction or not, but the fact that EVDO is here to stay for at least a few more years is evident! |
