QUALCOMM Introduces Next-Generation Voice Codec for Significant Network Capacity Increase on CDMA2000 Networks SAN DIEGO May 05, 2005 QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the Fourth-Generation Vocoder (4GV), a core voice codec suite that offers CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO operators the flexibility to make network adjustments that prioritize voice quality and network capacity. This vocoder was specifically designed to leverage 1xEV-DO Rev. A, increasing the overall quality of end-to-end services for delay-sensitive applications such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). QUALCOMM's 4GV solution supports both circuit-switched and packet-switched voice networks in a combined core that increase capacity by up to 40 percent. This integrated codec provides operators with an incremental software upgrade to simplify deployment and reduce overall costs. Technology trials of 4GV are expected in the second half of 2005, with commercialization as early as 2006.

"4GV is a single solution that gives the operator control to exercise its priorities in terms of capacity or voice quality to increase the reliability of their network," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "QUALCOMM designed the 4GV technology from the ground up to address network management challenges today and well into the future, making it an ideal codec to deliver IP-based voice services such as video telephony and push to talk."

To address varying market requirements, operators can choose to deploy 4GV over:

  • Narrow Band, to provide a network capacity increase of up to 40 percent over the current vocoder solution over existing systems
  • Wide Band, to offer superior voice quality enhancements
  • VoIP, to deliver better voice quality over packet networks through integrated Quality of Service (QoS) attributes designed within the core of the codec

QUALCOMM plans to support the 4GV solution in QUALCOMM's Mobile Station Modem (MSM) CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO chipsets, which also support the current vocoder solution. Wireless operators can realize even greater capacity improvements - up to double the capacity of today's networks - by deploying 4GV in conjunction with receive diversity technology. Quality of Service (QoS) delivers an enhanced user experience for delay-sensitive applications, including a variety of IP-based services such as VoIP and other real-time conversational services such as push-to-talk, video telephony, low-delay gaming and "instant multimedia" (an extension of push-to-talk that combines immediate voice with simultaneous delivery of video and pictures).
