Verizon Wireless Releases Android 2.1 Update for Motorola Droid

 

 

After many delays Verizon Wireless has finally began pushing out Android 2.1 to Motorola Droid phones. According to a company email that was obtained by Engadget, Verizon pushed out the 2.1 update to 1,000 users at noon today, and another 9,000 will get the update tat 11:59PM EST tonight. The remaining 200,000+ Droid owners will have to wait until 11:59PM EST on April 1st to receive the Android 2.1 upgrade.

The Android 2.1 Upgrade will add the following new features to the Droid:

  •  Pinch-to-zoom gestures in web browsing, photo gallery, and Google Maps
  •  Speech to text [This will allow users to fill out forms and create text messages using their voice]
  •  Live/Motion Wallpapers
  •  Weather & News Widgets
  •  Improved Photo Gallery

In order to receive the update, Droid owners will need to be in a native Verizon coverage area. You must also have at least 40% battery power available if the device is not connected to an external power source. If you are connected to an external power source you will need at least 20% battery charge in order to receive the update.
