Update Your PRL in a Cradlepoint RouterSince so many of our readers use Cradlepoint routers with their Sprint or Verizon aircards instead of using them directly in a computer, this week we're going to show you how you can perform PRL updates for many aircards without having to use your carrier's connection manager software. This is particularly useful if you are exclusively using your aircard in your Cradlepoint router and don't want to have your carriers connection manager software installed on your computer just for updating the PRL.Why is updating your PRL important? All Verizon and Sprint mobile broadband modems have a Preferred Roaming List (or PRL) embedded in the card. This list tells your card which towers to look for when establishing a connection, including towers from other carriers that Sprint or Verizon has roaming agreements with. As new cell towers are installed or new roaming agreements are reached, your PRL will become out of date because your card won't know to hunt for these new towers. You may be in a coverage area, but if your card doesn't have the tower in the list, it won't know to attempt to connect to the new tower! Your modem does not automatically "know" to add new towers to its PRL, so it is highly recommended that you manually update your PRL monthly so that you can ensure that your device is always able to connect to the currently available cell towers. Until recently, the only way to update your PRL was to plug your aircard into your computer and run the carrier's connection manager software. Now that Cradlepoint has added a PRL update feature to their routers, you can perform PRL updates directly from your Cradlepoint router for many popular devices! Not all aircards have access to this feature, though - if you are not sure if your device is one supports this feature, checkout our Data Device Comparison Chart. If your device has an "A" listed under the notes, then you will be able to perform PRL updates via your Cradlepoint router! Once you've verified that your aircard will support this feature, simply follow the steps below to perform a PRL update using the Cradlepoint router: 1. Log in to your router's administration page by entering "http://192.168.0.1" into your browser's address bar and entering your password (unless you've changed it, your password should be the last 6 digits of the MAC address located on the bottom of your router). 2. Click on the "Modem" tab at the top of the page 3. Select "Update" from the Modem menu on the left side of the page 4. Click the "initiate" button. You'll be asked to confirm that you want to continue; click "OK". Do not remove the modem from the router or unplug the router while it updates the PRL - you'll see a confirmation pop-up as soon as the process is complete (about 2 minutes).
