Android 2.2 For HTC EVO And Other Select Phones Might Hit Tomorrow
Owners of the HTC EVO 3G/4G and other select phones can start to celebrate, as it appears Android 2.2 Froyo (operating system for HTC EVO)
could be available tomorrow. Why should you be excited for this
upgrade? One of the many improvements that Android 2.2 will bring is
better performance when running applications. They have made
improvements to how applications are compiled that allows apps to run
more efficiently, which ultimately allows the applications to run faster
and smoother than ever before. Android's web browser Chrome, has also
been improved with a 2-3x javascript performance boost using the V8
engine which allows web apps to load a lot faster with Android 2.2.
During the live demonstration using Sun's standard Spider javascript
test, Chrome on Android 2.2 out performed the same phone running Android
2.1 and even outperformed the Apple iPad running Safari!
As soon as the update is released, we will be doing extensive tests on 2.2 Froyo and will post our results with the latest version. Froyo Android 2.2 Features:
Internal Sprint documents have shown up indicating some pretty clear plans for this weekend. Within these documents they specified MR is a high priority for competitive reasons and currently slated to launch at 12:00 pm CST on 7/30. The software will be available over the air via HTC FOTA servers and downloadable via 3G/Wi-Fi/4G. Customers will be able to use the handset during download but not during installation process. A PR announcement for 2.2 will happen Friday 7/30 morning. The announcement will let the communities know that we will start pushing out 2.2 beginning the week of 8/1. For a test bed, the new software will be available on client initiated on Friday afternoon which will give a good sampling before proactively pushing the notification software available Tuesday 8/2 (assuming everything goes well). Google has said the HTC EVO 4G will provide consumers with the best Android experience possible with it's 4.3in screen, 8mp camera, HDMI output, and most of all the first phone to use 4G technology to provide speeds up to 10mbit/sec!
