How To Update Sprint Overdrive Firmware When the Sierra Overdrive 3G/4G hotspot first became available from Sprint, many users (including our testers) experienced a number of frustrating problems. Luckily, Sprint and Sierra Wireless released a firmware update ( Version 2.06.06) that vastly improved stability, increased WiFi stability, increased 3G/4G WAN stability and even improved the battery life! Making sure that your Overdrive is up-to-date with the latest firmware ensures that you've got the latest functionality as well as increased stability. The process for upgrading the firmware is pretty straightforward - you can run an automatic upgrade or do it manually: Automatic Upgrade Process: - Before you start, make sure your Overdrive is plugged into AC power! You must be plugged into AC power to perform the update
- Power on your Overdrive and connect your computer to it via WiFi using the provided SSID (wireless network name) and network key
- Open your browser and type either http://overdrive/ or http://192.168.0.1
- On the homepage, enter the administrator password (default is "password")
- Click on "Advanced Settings" and go to the Device > Basic tab; select "check for updates now"
- You'll be presented with 3 options, select "Update Options"
- A window will pop up. Select "Download and Install Now"
- This process can take anywhere from 2-30 minutes depending on your 3G/4G connection speed
- After the download is complete, the new version will install on the device. The WEB UI will show "Software Update in Progress". After the package fully installs the device will reboot itself and the latest firmware will be installed (If the Overdrive doesn't reboot itself, manually turn the power off/on)
Alternative Option - Manual Upgrade Process: - Before you start, make sure your Overdrive is plugged into AC power! You must be plugged into AC power to perform the update
- Download Software Version: 2.06.06, Dated: 06/09/2010 here - Software Download
- Power on your Overdrive and connect your computer to it via WiFi using the provided SSID (wireless network name) and network key
- Open your web browser and type either http://overdrive/ or http://192.168.0.1
- On the homepage, enter the administrator password (default is "password")
- Click on "Advanced Settings" and go to the Device > Basic tab
- Manually update the Firmware by selecting the "Choose File" option under the Update Firmware from file. Navigate to the file you downloaded in step 2. After you've found the file, select it and click "Update" to proceed.
- The device will begin installing the software indicated by a percentage. Once the update is completed the device should reboot so you can reconnect.
