Tekkeon myPower MP1280 Battery for Verizon/AT&T iPhone 4 Now Available at 3Gstore

Like millions of others, most of the 3Gstore staff uses the Apple iPhone on a regular basis. Besides the common network complaints, the number one concern we - and many other users - have had with all of the versions of the iPhone is the battery life (check out this article we wrote last year about improving the iPhone's battery life). While the iPhone 4's battery life is impressive compared to previous versions of the iPhone, thanks to all the fun stuff the phone is capable of (apps, games, video, multitasking...), battery life is still a major concern for many users.

There are a plethora of external battery options available for the iPhone 4, and ever since Apple launched the iPhone 4, we have been searching for the "perfect battery" that fits a few simple but crucial criteria: it must power the iPhone 4 for a looooong time (duh), be low-profile and lightweight (no one wants to ruin the good looks of their sleek iPhone or not be able to fit it in their pocket), it must leave all the buttons easily accessible (even for those of us with big hands/fingers), and it must be affordable. Once Apple announced the launch of the Verizon version of the iPhone 4, we added one more item to our "perfect battery" wishlist: it must be compatible with both the AT&T and Verizon versions.

After several months of testing batteries from a variety of manufacturers, we finally found one that fits ALL of our criteria: the Tekkeon myPower MP1280 for iPhone 4!

The myPower for iPhone 4 is a slim two-piece case that snaps around your iPhone (see image below). Unlike similar batteries, the condensed lithium polymer battery bypasses your phone's internal battery and powers your phone instead of charging it. This is much more efficient than other batteries! Only when the myPower battery is depleted does your phone's internal battery kick in - so if you start with your phone's battery at 100% and the myPower all charged up, by the time the myPower is depleted and your iPhone's battery kicks in, you'll still have around 97% of your internal battery!

The myPower features a micro USB port at the bottom that is used for charging or syncing (a USB cable is included). The battery takes about 3 hours to charge by itself, or about 6 hours if you want to charge your phone and the battery at the same time.

The amount of time the battery can power the iPhone was obviously one of our top concerns when evaluating the myPower, and we are VERY impressed with how much extra usage time it provides. Below are estimates of how much extended usage time the myPower provides:

  • Talk Time: Up to 5 hours on 3G; Up to 10 hours on 2G
  • Internet Use: Up to 4.2 hours on 3G; Up to 7 hours on Wi-Fi
  • Video Playback: Up to 7 hours
  • Audio Playback: Up to 28 hours
  • *Hours shown are approximate and will vary depending on actual usage.

A convenient indicator light on the bottom lets you know when it's time to recharge - it shines blue when it is fully charged and switches to orange to warn you when the battery is running low!

The battery is easy to use and clearly powers the phone for a long time, but we also know that the size and shape of an accessory like this are very important. The myPower is extremely lightweight (just 1.84oz) and very low-profile; it barely adds any bulk to the phone. Since it doubles as a protective case/bumper, the slight size increase is more than worth it - the myPower adds hardly any more bulk than any hard iPhone case (check out the video below to see the size!).

We mentioned that one of our criteria for the "perfect battery" was that the buttons needed to be easily accessible. Sounds like a no-brainer, but many of the other batteries we evaluated made it very tricky to access the volume toggle buttons or power button, especially for those of us with bigger hands. As you can see in the below video, Tekkeon did a GREAT job strategically placing the cutouts for the buttons so that they are just about as easy to access with the battery installed as they are without! The placement of the cutouts is also crucial for Verizon and AT&T compatibility - since the buttons on the Verizon iPhone are placed slightly differently than they are on the AT&T version, if those cutouts were too small, the battery wouldn't work with the Verizon version (because the buttons would be blocked). Other similar batteries will NOT work with the Verizon iPhone for this very reason, but the myPower WILL work with either version thanks to the design.

Finally, the myPower fits the bill (pun intended) when it comes to the price, too. The Tekkeon myPower in red, black, or white is launching at 3Gstore this week for just $59.95!
