AT&T and Verizon iPhone 4 Hotspot

A few months ago, introduced the Nexaira BC2, a powerful business class 3G/4G router that allows users to tether the AT&T iPhone 4, just like a mobile broadband modem. Tethering the iPhone 4 with the BC2 allows you to connect ethernet devices, share the connection with multiple computers/devices, and take advantage of a variety of advanced functions.

Now that iOS 4.3 is out for AT&T, the tethering option has been expanded from Bluetooth and USB to include WiFi. Both AT&T and Verizon users can now activate their iPhone 4’s “WiFi Hotspot” feature, which turns the iPhone into a WiFi hotspot for up to 3 users (plus you can tether to another computer and connect one more via Bluetooth for a total of 5 devices). This is a great feature and very convenient - and there are a lot of cool things you can do with it!

Cool Things You Can Do With your iPhone 4 with Hotspot:

  • Avoid paying for a dedicated data plan on your iPad or iPad 2 - just activate the iPhone’s hotspot and connect your iPad to the iPhone’s WiFi network. You can even use Facetime (on the iPad 2) via your iPhone 4’s data connection!  We strongly recommend getting an iPhone 4 Battery that doubles your battery life.

  • Purchase a Pepwave Surf Mini WiFi to Ethernet Bridge or CradlePoint CTR35 router to add the ability to use ethernet devices such as PBX Phones, desktop computers without WiFi, gaming consoles, etc. Both the Mini and CTR35 will also increase the wireless range as well as allow you to connect more WiFi clients (the iPhone alone will only allow 3 wireless devices to connect to the iPhone’s hotspot).

  • Use the iPhone 4’s hotspot feature as an automatic backup to your primary internet connection with the CradlePoint CTR35 . The CTR35 supports ethernet-to-WiFi failover - you can set up your cable/DSL/T-1/satellite line as your primary connection and the iPhone hotspot as the backup; when your primary connection goes down the CTR35 will automatically connect to the iPhone hotspot, and your network (and all the connected equipment) will be back online in a matter of seconds! Check out the video below demonstrating the CTR35 failing over from ethernet to WiFi:
