Capabilities of wireless and wireline networks enable Sprint to offer a secure, converged, end-to-end solution for business-customer data access that helps lower costs, drive productivity and increase customers satisfaction

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Further erasing the imaginary line between wireless and wireline communications technologies, Sprint today announced enhancements to Sprint PCS Data Link that allow customers to replace or back-up existing wireline data access for business locations or leverage new remote-access features for their mobile workforce. Wireless data access for office locations is an exciting new offer at Sprint, enabling business customers to leverage the low cost and flexibility of wireless as a true wireline data access replacement technology. Sprint expects to make these capabilities available to business customers next month.

Sprint PCS Data Link for Wireless WAN

Using a Sprint-certified CDMA modem, companies can use Sprint PCS Data Link to provide primary or back-up traditional wireline data access for fixed office locations, better meeting the needs of businesses that want a solution that is more economical than traditional wireline data access. It also enables fast deployment to support temporary or new retail facilities. Even if a line is cut, customer access will remain intact, so critical business applications can remain available.

Sprint PCS Data Link for Wireless WAN capabilities will appeal to a wide- range of industries. Examples of ways Sprint PCS Data Link for Wireless WAN can be used include:

  • Retail -- A rapidly expanding clothing retailer is able to use a combination of Sprint wireless service and SprintLink(SM) Frame Relay to quickly and cost-effectively turn up new stores with added location flexibility.

  • Financial Services -- A nationwide financial-services provider backs-up branch offices and deploys mobile wireless ATM machines toincrease convenience and continuity of services.

  • Regardless of the industry, companies can extend their applications virtually anytime, anywhere from the Sprint Nationwide PCS Network with average data speeds of 50 to 70 kbps. Sprint's deployment of broadband EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) will boost download speeds up to 10 times faster wherever EV-DO coverage is made available.

Sprint PCS Data Link for Mobile Access

Using a Sprint PCS Connection Card(TM) with a compatible laptop or handheld wireless device, mobile employees can quickly gain secure access to their company's intranet, databases, shared files, email and other corporate applications. Sprint PCS Data Link has its own connection manager or can be supported through Sprint Extended Workplace(SM), a one-of-a-kind remote-access tool that allows users to view a menu of all available access options and click to connect to corporate resources.

"The introduction of Sprint PCS Data Link for wireless WAN demonstrates Sprint's ability to deploy wireless as an alternative option to traditional wireline services -- a distinct advantage over our competitors," said David Owens, vice president - Marketing, Sprint Business Solutions. "Whether companies want to lower costs by establishing a primary wireless access connection or drive productivity with remote access to their mobile workforce, the new capabilities of Sprint PCS Data Link will provide the flexibility and security our business customers require."

Sprint PCS Data Link is part of Sprint's robust remote-access portfolio designed to help companies reduce costs, increase productivity and improve customer satisfaction. Whether connecting to Sprint's MPLS VPN, SprintLink Frame Relay or a Sprint-provided CPE IP VPN, the customer's traffic is protected by multiple security layers and is segregated from the public Internet until safely behind the corporate firewall.

The first Verizon vs. Sprint fight may be in marketing EVDO. Sprint, is clearly letting people know the different ways to use EVDO. As an emergency backup for when your wired connection goes down - is a very smart marketing move. Unfortunately, for both Verizon & Sprint, every clever use that each comes up with - can be used on either EVDO network. So, it really only comes down to ONE issue, which provider has better coverage for the areas that I need it.
