PC5220 Mac Lost Signal Indicator Fix

Sunday, 14 August 2005
ImageWe have had 2 reports of lost signal indicators in the menu bar from PC5220 users over the last 1 week. Well today, it happened to us too. The solution to fix this problem, was to re-install Mac OS X, up until now.

The problem appears to be related to corrupted files in your hard drive. The following steps will remove the corruption and allow you to regain your menu bar, without re-installing your operating system.

This page will step you through regaining the signal indicator in a few steps without having to re-installer Mac OS X!

  • Open the Terminal application which is located in /Applications/Utilities/
  • Copy the following line and paste it into the Terminal window:

    sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache

  • And then press return. You will be prompted to enter your password - this is your administrator password you enter when installing any software. Next copy and paste the following line:

    sudo kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

  • And then press return. Quit out of the Terminal. Restart your PowerBook and after inserting, your should insert your PC5220 card and you now see the signal indicator.

This is what the Terminal window will look like (except you will see your login name):
