Vodafone to Ship Smith Micro Connectivity Manager Application

Thursday, 15 September 2005
ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Smith Micro Software Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI - News), a developer and marketer of software solutions for the wireless market, was selected by Vodafone, the world's largest mobile community, to develop a CDMA based wireless data connectivity application that includes EV-DO. Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) is a third-generation (3G) wide-area network technology that supports data throughput speeds of 400-700 kilobits per second (kbps). The application became available to Vodafone at the time of this announcement.

The customized data connectivity application is the EV-DO enhancement to the Vodafone Mobile Connect proposition and is based upon Smith Micro's popular QuickLink Mobile. Vodafone will target current international business subscribers from locations within Europe who travel to locations in the United States. The EV-DO capability will be bundled with the Vodafone Mobile Connect offering which includes a UMTS PC Card and an EV-DO PC Card. Once the traveler reaches the United States, they can log onto a CDMA high speed wireless data network.

Smith Micro localized the EV-DO enhancement to Vodafone Mobile Connect software into several different languages including English, German and Dutch.

The Smith Micro EV-DO enhancement to Vodafone Mobile Connect has an install wizard that detects the PC Card and sets up the application with little interaction required for the user making the process seamless. A toolbar in the application simplifies connecting and disconnecting from the data network. It also makes launching a VPN connection very easy, and provides integration with the user's email and browser applications.

In addition to the EV-DO enhancement, Smith Micro developed an application that will identify the PC Card being used for that session. The application simplifies connecting to either the Vodafone's 3G/UMTS networks or the CDMA network in the United States. It will detect which PC Card is installed in the notebook and launch the appropriate application.

"Smith Micro is pleased to provide these software applications to one of the world's largest mobile telecommunications companies," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Smith Micro. "We believe our selection by Vodafone is a testament to our ability to satisfy the wireless market with unique and high-quality wireless connectivity software."
