Updating your Verizon and Sprint PRL

All Verizon and Sprint EVDO modems have a Preferred Roaming List (or PRL) embedded in the card. This list tells your card which towers to look for when establishing connection, including towers from other carriers that Sprint/Verizon has roaming agreements with. As new EVDO towers are installed or new roaming agreements are reached, your PRL will become out of date because it won't know to hunt for these new towers. You may be in an EVDO area, but if your card doesn't have the tower in the list, it won't know to attempt to connect to the new tower!

Your EVDO modem does not automatically "know" to add new towers to its PRL, so it is highly recommended that you manually update your PRL monthly so that you can ensure that your EVDO device is always able to connect to the currently available EVDO towers.

Need help determining which version PRL you have and updating to the latest version? Follow these steps:

Using your aircard in a Cradlepoint router? For many modems, you can update the PRL right from the router: Updating Your PRL in a Cradlepoint Router.

For Verizon
:

In VZ Access Manager, in the menu bar select "About VZ Access manager" from the "Help" menu ("VZAccess Manager" menu on Mac). This will bring up the diagnostic info about your device, including your current PRL version:

To update your PRL to the latest version, select "Activation" from the "Options" menu. VZ Access manager will automatically update your PRL:

vzam activation

That's it! Your Verizon PRL has been updated.

For Sprint:

In Sprint SmartView, select "Mobile Info" from the "Tools" menu to view your current PRL:

To update to the latest PRL, simply select "Activate" from the "Tools" menu (activating your modem will require you to enter your activation code - if you don't know this, you can call Sprint to find out what it is [or 3Gstore if you ordered from us!]):

sv activate

That's it! Your Sprint PRL has been updated.
