Verizon Wireless And Lenovo Team To Provide Integrated High-Speed Wireless Notebook Connectivity ThinkPad Notebooks to Feature Integrated Technology that Enables High-Speed Access to Verizon Wireless EV-DO Wide-Area Wireless Broadband Network BEDMINSTER, NJ Verizon Wireless and Lenovo today announced plans to integrate wireless technology using Verizon Wireless Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network in upcoming versions of ThinkPad notebooks, beginning with the new ThinkPad Z60m available Oct. 11. EV-DO-based high-speed wireless wide-area network (WWAN) transmits data at average speeds between 400-700 kbps. For the first time, PC users will have wireless broadband access across Verizon Wireless nationwide EV-DO network the largest high-speed wireless broadband network in the United States without a separate PC card or additional hardware. Verizon Wireless network runs on EV-DO technology licensed from Qualcomm. Through the relationship, ThinkPad notebooks will be preconfigured for Verizon Wireless EV-DO network that delivers a more pervasive and secure Internet connection than traditional Wi-Fi, enabling access in more than 60 major metropolitan areas and airports. Users will no longer need to be centrally located near wireless hubs, or Wi-Fi hot spots, an ideal situation for mobile and small business professionals who are on the go and often located in areas where Wi-Fi hot spots are not readily available. ThinkPad notebooks are already recognized as having the industrys most advanced security features. Verizon Wireless EV-DO network provides an additional layer of security with technology that encrypts each wireless transmission, providing a connection more secure than traditional Wi-Fi hot spots. ThinkPad notebooks with integrated WWAN and EV-DO capabilities will enable IT departments to avoid hardware incompatibility issues, plus they can expect less hardware to troubleshoot and replace as no PC card is necessary for connection and improved data security for employees who frequently travel. As we continue to build out our wireless broadband network, were focusing on developing products and services for todays enterprise customers and mobile professionals, said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. Our relationship with Lenovo is part of our strategic plan to help serve these customers in a way that streamlines the purchasing process and gives them new wireless options to help them work more productively. With the upcoming ThinkPad notebooks, customers with any monthly Verizon Wireless voice plan can receive unlimited BroadbandAccess for $59.99 monthly access with a two-year customer agreement. For non-voice customers, BroadbandAccess is available for $79.99 monthly access for unlimited use with a one- or two-year customer agreement. ThinkPad customers will need to contact Verizon Wireless to set up their service. We think that it is great that Verizon Wireless is doing this, we see a few issues with built-in EVDO, they are:
