QUALCOMM Extends Family of Single-Chip Solutions for CDMA2000 1X Dual-Band Networks

Tuesday November 8, 7:30 am ET - Improved Capacity, Power Consumption and Position-Location Features Enable Smaller Mainstream Devices with Richer Functionality -

LONDON, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, today announced that the Company has expanded its family of QUALCOMM Single Chip(TM) (QSC(TM)) solutions for dual-band (800, 1900 MHz) CDMA2000 1X networks. Significant improvements in network capacity and power consumption are combined with new, advanced multimedia and position-location capabilities in the dual-band, single-chip solutions. The highly integrated QSC solutions combine baseband modem, multimedia, radio transceiver, GPS and power management functionality, enabling device manufacturers to create smaller and sleeker CDMA2000 1X mainstream devices at reduced cost. Sampling is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2006.

"QUALCOMM's new QSC solutions enable slimmer devices with feature-rich multimedia, advanced GPS capabilities, and low power consumption for wider mainstream markets," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "These products also deliver significant capacity benefits for CDMA2000 1X network operators, reinforcing our commitment to continuously innovate in both existing and developing CDMA markets around the world."

The QSC family of integrated solutions is designed to eliminate the need for certain discrete components in handset designs to lower development and manufacturing costs, reduce bill-of-materials costs and accelerate time to market. Because the QSC solutions have fewer components and are highly integrated, they enable richer functionality on smaller, sleeker, and thinner devices with optimized power consumption. QUALCOMM's new QSC products are targeted primarily for mainstream markets in North America, as well as markets in India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The new QSC solutions deliver:

    * Multi-band functionality, including support for PCS and cellular bands
    * Advanced 65 nanometer (nm) process technology for further improvements
       in power consumption
    * Multiple technologies to improve CDMA2000 1X network capacity:
-- QLIC (quasi-linear interference cancellation including pilot and
          traffic interference cancellation)
       -- Fourth Generation Vocoder(TM) (4GV(TM)) - a core voice codec suite
giving network operators the flexibility to prioritize voice quality
          or network capacity
    *  Advanced position-location capabilities for high-end positioning
       functionality in mainstream markets:
-- State-of-the-art -159 dBm GPS sensitivity for enhanced performance
indoors and in dense urban areas
-- Simultaneous-GPS capabilities supporting concurrent voice and
positioning, enabling seamless E911 calls and voice-based location
          services
-- Enhanced GPS navigation algorithms to boost the precision of
navigation applications for automobiles and pedestrians
       -- Standalone-GPS functionality for off-network navigation, asset
          management and recreational applications

The second generation of QUALCOMM's QSC solutions enables CDMA2000 1X network operators to realize significant gains in network capacity. The combination of QLIC and 4GV on handsets allows up to a 60% increase in total network capacity, and also enhances network performance on the forward link. The additional implementation of four-way receive diversity at the base station can deliver up to double the system capacity within the same spectrum.

This will allow cheaper and thinner phones to be available in 2006/2007 AND allow CDMA carriers (e.g. Verizon & Sprint) to allow 60% increase in customer base without having to increase bandwidth/towers. WOW!
