NEWS UPDATE March 2007 Sprint now has the Merlin EX720 Rev A ExpressCard for MacBook Pro Verizon has the Novatel V740 Rev A ExpressCard for MacBook Pro Below is useful information - but a bit dated, click on the links above.
August 3, 2006 - Verizon Announced the Novatel V640 today (to ship on 8/10/2006). We are now taking orders for the Novatel V640 ExpressCard Rev 0. Apple announced the MacBook Pro on January 10, 2006 and it will probably be shipping sometime in February. We have already received tons of emails and forum posts about the MacBook Pro; many people are wondering if it will be compatible with EVDO since it uses an ExpressCard instead of the standard PCMCIA format. Some people even stated that that they were going to wait to purchase the MacBook Pro until there a solution to use EVDO with the Pro was available. First the good news: Apple is NOT the first manufacturer to build an ExpressCard into a laptop. The following models already use ExpressCard/34:
For an updated list, see our Laptops with ExpressCard Forum Post. So, the GOOD news is that Apple is not the first and only vendor to standardize on this. Also, PCMCIA officials expect that 70% of all laptops shipped next year will contain an ExpressCard slot. ![]() Since the MacBook Pro does not have a PCMCIA slot (PC Slot), the current crop of PC Cards (KPC650, PC5220, Novatel V620, PC5740, Merlin S620, AirCard 580) WILL NOT work in the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro uses a newer slot called the ExpressCard/34. This newer slot is smaller and is not compatible with existing PCMCIA cards (and there is no PCMCIA-to-ExpressCard adapter at this time), so we have to wait for Kyocera, Novatel or Sierra Wireless to have an EVDO ExpressCard. July 6, 2006 We received the Dell ExpressCard 5700 and it is currently not compatible with MacBook Pro. We are waiting on the Verizon version, which will come with a version of VZAccess that supports Mac OS X. For more info see the following EVDOforums.com thread (it does work under BootCamp): Novatel V640 ExpressCard and Mac Drivers, Support - July 5, 2006 The official name of the Novatel ExpressCard is the Novatel V640; it was previously known as the Novatel XV620 July 3, 2006 ExpressCards coming soon, see our ExpressCard Notification list to be emailed when available. June 19, 2006 - Novatel XV620 Approved - Coming Soon! April 24, 2006 - MacBook Pro 17 inch released. Also (as expected) supports the ExpressCard/34 format. Also, the new MacBook 13" does not have an ExpressCard OR PC slot, so the Sprint USB device or a standard PC card along with an EVDO router will be options for those users. *** New April 10, 2006 News *** Novatel will be announcing a new USB EVDO Device that will work with the MacBook Pro (later this year?) Sometime mid to late June 2006 we are expecting Verizon to deliver an ExpressCard solution for Mac Book Pro. Verizon may not include Mac Drivers in the first release (not confirmed). However, Apple is expected to support the Novatel Express Card through Apple's Software Update (Way to Go Apple!). Things are starting to look great for MacBook users.
