About Sprint Family LocatorWhat is Sprint Family Locator?Sprint Family Locator is an inexpensive way ($9.95/per month) for families on the go to stay in constant touch. Mom, Dad or a trusted caregiver can locate loved ones without disturbing their activities, receive notification when a child enters or leaves a designated area, and quickly and easily send text messages to one or more family members. The application uses GPS technology to determine the location of authorized mobile handsets, which it then displays on an interactive map. Sprint Family Locator also provides an intuitive interface for text-message communication and account management. These features are accessible from both a registered mobile handset and the secure Sprint Family Locator Web site. What is GPS?GPS stands for Global Positioning System. The system consists of 24 orbiting satellites that transmit continuous signals to GPS receivers. The latitude and longitude of a GPS receiver can be determined by triangulating the position of at least three of these satellites. Although GPS was originally developed for US military purposes, it became available for commercial use in the mid 1980s. A GPS receiver is incorporated into every Sprint phone sold since January 2002. What is a Safety Check?Suppose you want to confirm that your daughter reaches school each morning without interrupting your activities. Sprint Family Locator developed Safety Checks as a solution to just this sort of problem. Simply put, Safety Checks are periodic, automatic location requests coupled with notification. At a certain time on selected days, a Safety Check will perform an automated location request for a "Child" handset and then notify you where that handset is. You select the time of day, days of the week, "Child" handset, and notification method - all via Sprint Family Locator. Can Sprint Family Locator find a phone that has been turned off?No, Sprint Family Locator can only find phones that are in their coverage area and that are turned on. Since you may want to schedule Safety Checks during school hours, be sure to set your childrens phone to silent or vibrate to avoid interrupting their classes. Can anyone locate me at any time? Do any laws protect my privacy?Only the Sprint Nextel Account Holder who is financially responsible for your handset can grant permission for Sprint Family Locator to locate your handset. As an extra layer of security, this Account Holder must grant permission from their password-protected MyNextel or MyPCS account. Only persons that the Account Holder authorizes can locate your handset, and only using applications that the Account Holder approves. What is CDMA?CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) is a wireless technology associated with the Sprint PCS network. It was first patented for consumer use by Qualcomm. What is iDEN?iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) is a wireless technology associated with the Nextel network. It was first patented for consumer use by Motorola.
