Sprint and Alltel to Announce 10-Year Roaming-Service Deal

Sprint Nextel Corp and Alltel are about to announce a 10-yaer roaming service deal that would expand their coverage areas.

This deal is Sprint's first major roaming agreement for broadband service.

Sprint says its broadband-access service currently covers more than 150 million consumers in 220 communities and will be available to 190 million consumers by year end. Verizon Wireless has made its broadband service available to 154 million consumers, a spokesman said

The agreement starts July 1, 2006 and includes phone and data.

Verizon has had 1X roaming with AllTel for some time now, and we expect Verizon to follow with similar agreements.

*** Latest Update***

"Does the agreement with Alltel mean that we will have data roaming coverage July 1?

No. July 1 is ONLY the effective date of the contract. Sprint/Nextel is working through the data roaming implementation process with Alltel and other roaming partners to provide data roaming coverage. 1xRTT data roaming coverage is expected to be delivered sometime in 3Q06. Delivery of EVDO data roaming coverage is still TBD."
