Verizon EVDO Rev A Available and ReadyWe were excited the other day to see that the Sierra AirCard 595 was available from our Verizon warehouse and we immediately ordered a bunch. Today we received the PCMCIA Rev A card and we were shocked to find that all of Chicago is Verizon Rev A territory! One of the reasons that Sprint beat Verizon in deploying EVDO Rev A devices, was that they shipped EVDO Rev A devices with EVDO Rev 0 software - Verizon has done the same with the AirCard 595. Before, the card will "see" EVDO Rev A, a firmware upgrade needs to be performed. This is fairly simple to do. ![]() After doing the upgrade, we noticed that EVDO Rev A is live ALL over Chicago. Looking in VZAccess Manager, you can see at the bottom, it will tell you if you are in "Rev-A" Failure to do the update and you will NOT be able to connect at Rev A (only Rev 0 & 1xRTT) ![]() We suspect that Verizon has been quietly deploying EVDO Rev A over the past 3-4 months. Since, there wasn't an EVDO Rev A device, nobody actually was able to confirm this. Now that the first EVDO Rev A card is shipping - Verizon cannot hide this little secret any longer. The speeds are impressive. Here is the first benchmark we did in a very weak signal area, along with the ping tests that we saw: ![]() ![]() If you have an AirCard 595 (or other Rev A devices that Verizon may come out with), be sure to post you location to our: Verizon EVDO Rev A Sightings Thread - EVDOforums Related Articles: |
