This may only affect someone who purchased a PC 5220 in 2004 or someone who purchased a 5220 from old inventory. There was a problem with a PC 5220 cards produced before January 2004. This problem could cause reliability issues, especially when updating to new PRLs. If your card cannot update to new PRLs, newer EVDO towers will be invisible to your card and defeat the whole purpose of having a super fast wireless PC card. Here are the 2 ways to tell if you have an updated PC 5220 card:
If your card was produced before 0044, then you do not have the P8A card, and this could cause problems when connecting via EVDO. In this case, call Verizon Wireless. Tell them that your situation and that you need a P8A card. They should send you a replacement free of charge. Here is what the sticker looks like: ![]() EBAY / BUYING USED PC 5220 WARNING If you are buying your PC 5220 card from eBay, you may be purchasing old Sierra / Audiovox / AirPrime PC 5220 cards that are firmware version P7. So WATCH OUT and know what you are purchasing before buying. Here are 2 examples of PC 5220 cards we purchased off of eBay, this card was made on the 174 day of 2003: ![]() This card was made on the 253 day of 2003: ![]() *** UPDATE *** According to Verizon, all PC 5220 units shipped after January 2005 have this fix and DO NOT include a P8A sticker. Cool Tip Update your PRL and confirm that you have the latest version. Call Verizon Wireless and have them verify what tower you are currently connected to. They should be able to tell you if that tower is Broadband Access capable. If you are out of range, you can buy a booster antenna, which may pull in the weaker EVDO signal.
