Mac OS X 10.4.9 and VZAccess Manager Issues

There is a serious conflict with Apple's latest Mac OS X 10.4.9, Verizon's VZAccess Manager (3.3 and earlier) and Intel Based laptops (MacBook & MacBook Pro Only), which is used for the following Verizon Cards:

Apple released the Apple WWAN Update on 2/19/2007, which added support directly into Mac OS X for the above cards. The Apple WWAN update was a software update for Mac OS X 10.4.8, but now is included automatically with Mac OS X 10.4.9.

Here is the problem.

The Apple WWAN Update which is built-into Mac OS X 10.4.9, takes a higher priority when you insert one of the above EVDO Cards into your intel based Mac and when you run VZAccess Manager, your card will not be recognized. For new users of the Verizon cards, if they follow the directions included with their new card, they will see the following error:

This problem is also in the latest VZAccess Manager 3.3.0 for the new Novatel V740 Rev A ExpressCard.

There are three solutions to solve this problem:

1) Don't use VZAccess Manager and use the Apple WWAN update that shows up in your menu bar.

2) Remove the Apple WWAN update (not simple, but can be done).

3) If you are running 10.4.8 or before, DO not upgrade to Apple WWAN Update/10.4.9 and you can use VZAccess Manager.

If you purchased your Verizon V740, USB720 or V640 from 3Gstore.com, please send an email to support @ 3Gstore.com (subject of 'Send WWAN Removal PDF', be sure to include your full name, so we can lookup your purchase info from 3Gstore.com) and we will send you directions on how to completely remove the Apple WWAN Update (IF you want to use VZAccess Manager), this PDF will also step you through re-installing the Apple WWAN Update, if you want to revert.

If you use the Apple WWAN drivers, when you insert your supported EVDO card into your intel based laptop, you will see the picture below in your menu bar. Since, Apple doesn't provide documentation/support for the Apple WWAN drivers, EVDOinfo has written an 8 page PDF that describes tips and tricks on using the menu bar (included on your CD when we activate your card before shipping, or just email support @ 3Gstore.com for a copy, only available for those that purchased from us).

There was a similar problem, see 10.4.7 & VZAccess Manager Issue, but the problem was a bit different and easily solved by selecting Uninstall in VZAccess Manager and any user could easily select to use VZAccess or Apple's drivers. Now, it is a bit different. by default VZAccess Manager WILL NOT WORK if you have 10.4.8 + Apple WWAN drivers, OR running Mac OS X 10.4.9.

We expect the next version of VZAccess Manager to hopefully address this issue, OR perhaps a change from Apple to "play nicer".
