Sprint Drops USB Y Cable from Novatel U720

First the USB Y Cable was not approved from the FCC and it delayed the original release by 30 days.  Now, Sprint quiely drops the USB Y Adapter cable in favor of a single USB Cable for the U720.

A few weeks ago, Sprint quietly dropped the Y Adapter Cable from the Novatle U720 USB Modem. The Y Adapter cable was used to give additional power to the U720 when in fringe areas. We contacted Novatel to find out why and we got this response:

When the U720 was originally launched the Y cable was included in case additional power was needed. Since that time we have received market feedback and have completed intensive testing that suggests that a Y cable for increased power would only be needed .22% percent of the time, e.g. fringe coverage areas, etc. In Jan. '07 we presented the data to our customer and they agreed to remove the cable out of the kit.

Here at, we have seen situations where the Y Adapter cable actually makes a difference in signal and speeds (when in fringe areas).  We are looking at getting our own Y Adapter cables for our customers.
