Independent Test Lab's Data Shows KPC680 Fastest Even in Poor Signal Conditions

SAN DIEGO--Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global manufacturer of CDMA wireless phones and devices, today announced that the Kyocera KPC680 ExpressCard with CDMA2000® 1x Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO) Revision A (Rev. A) technology was the overall winner in a recent test of commercially available Rev. A devices by Quality Partners1, an independent third-party testing lab, in a test commissioned by Kyocera. The Kyocera KPC680, now available from 3Gstore.com for $19.99 (after a $50 rebate), bested EV-DO Rev. A-enabled products from Sierra Wireless (AirCard 595U), Novatel Wireless (V740) and Pantech (PC5750).

In side-by-side testing the Kyocera KPC680s throughput/speed was ranked highest overall, with speeds up to 32 percent faster than the competitors. The testing measured upload and download speeds while stationary and mobile, in both strong and weak network coverage conditions. In seven of the eight possible test scenarios, the Kyocera ExpressCard demonstrated faster average throughput/speeds than the other devices. The KPC680 ranked first in download speeds while stationary with good signal strength; first in upload and download speeds while mobile with good signal strength; first in upload and download speeds while stationary with poor signal strength; and first in upload and download speeds while mobile with poor signal strength.

The Kyocera KPC680 validates our commitment to provide premium performance and value to our customers, said Cheri de Lacy, vice president of strategic planning and product development at Kyocera Wireless Corp. We are pleased that even with virtually identical price points to our competitors, the KPC680 significantly outshines our competitors in performance. No marketing spin, the testing results speak for themselves; the KPC680 is the clear choice for users among todays Rev. A data devices.

The superior performance of Kyoceras KPC680 ExpressCard is attributable in part to its breakthrough antenna design, with a hinge that creates greater reception sensitivity by moving the antenna away from the device as it is opened. The card also has dual external antenna ports for enhanced signal flexibility. The result is superior performance even when signal strength is not optimal. Kyoceras KPC680 also features hybrid-mode support, providing a handoff to CDMA2000 EVDO Rev. 0 and CDMA2000 1xRTT service when EV-DO Rev. A broadband service is unavailable.

The easy-to-use Kyocera KPC680 ExpressCard card can be installed in minutes and gives laptop users high-speed wireless data access at download speeds up to 3.1 Mbps and upload speeds up to 1.8 Mbps2. Based on these peak speeds, users in Rev. A coverage areas could download a one Megabyte file the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file in as few as eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in as few as 13 seconds. With the Kyocera KPC680, business customers in the field are able to access data quickly and easily, increasing overall productivity by remaining connected to customers, partners and co-workers. In addition to the convenience of mobility, KPC680 also offers broadband access to corporate applications, e-mail, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and the Internet.

The KPC680s ExpressCard format aligns with current laptop trends. Analyst firm IDC predicts that 75 percent of laptops will have ExpressCard slots by 2008, increasing to 95 percent by 20103. Kyocera also offers a PCMCIA sled adaptor and a USB dongle adaptor, making the KPC680 compatible with most any computing device. The KPC680 card measures 4.5 x 1.34 x 0.63 in (115 x 34 x 16 mm) and weighs 1.3 ounces (36.25 grams).

Quality Partners has not analyzed the above percentage statements. Original results were expressed as Kilobits-per-seconds (kbps). For purposes of the comparison, all competitor devices were acquired by Quality Partners, while Kyocera devices were provided and pre-configured by Kyocera.
