Sprint Severs Internet Connection to Cogent Communications

***Sprint resolved this issue Sunday, November 2. Customers should no longer be having problems accessing Cogent servers. Please read this post for more details.

Sprint announced at 4:30pm yesterday that they are severing their internet connection to Cogent Communications. According to the press release below, "it is no longer possible for many Sprint customers and Cogent customers to directly communicate across the Internet". In addition, for Sprint users attempting to connect to any websites or servers serviced by Cogent, this could prove to be a big problem.

At, we understand that this could come as a major inconvenience to some of our Sprint customers, so we wanted to suggest some workarounds for our Sprint EVDO customers that we hope will help you.

If you are having trouble accessing specific websites, we would suggest using a proxy server. Using a proxy server is like using a translator to speak with someone who doesn't understand your language. Instead of dealing directly with the server you want, you'll be making a request somewhere else (the proxy) and then your connection will view web content that is forwarded to you. We created a PDF file on how to use a proxy server, so we encourage our customers (who purchased their Sprint Cards from to email support(at) to request a copy.

Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon, but we're happy to help our customers with a solution in the meantime.

WASHINGTON, Oct 30, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ ----On October 30 at 4:30 pm Sprint-Nextel severed its Internet connection to Cogent thereby partitioning the Internet. It is no longer possible for many Sprint customers and Cogent customers to directly communicate across the Internet. Sprint did so in violation of a contractual obligation to exchange Internet traffic with Cogent on a settlement free peering basis. Sprint and Cogent are engaged in litigation over this matter. Cogent regrets that Sprint chose to take this unilateral action rather than await a determination by the court as to the rights of the parties. Cogent remains ready to reestablish, on the same settlement free basis as previously existed, the connections that Sprint has severed.

In the over 1300 on-net locations worldwide where Cogent provides service, Cogent is offering every Sprint-Nextel wireline customer that is unable to connect to Cogent's customers a free 100 megabit per second connection to the Internet for as long as Sprint continues to keep this partitioning of the Internet in place. Unfortunately, there is no way that Cogent can do the same for the wireless customers of Sprint-Nextel.

All other major wireless carriers have full connectivity to Cogent and are unaffected by this event.
