According to this article, it sounds like AirCell, is doing this:

  • pointing 125 EVDO antennas across the country towards the sky
  • sounds like the specs are EVDO Rev A (3.1mb is Rev A, 2.4mb is EVDO Rev 0)
  • Airplanes in North America will be able to use this service
  • On the plane will be an Access Point (AP), that allows WiFi users on the airplane to access the internet

  • Sounds like Boeing Connexion and Airbus' OnAir use satellite to plane technology (which is more expensive).

This sounds like a very fast and inexpensive way to add WiFi access on airplanes.

Discuss this on a EVDO Forums.
