How to Activate Your Sprint or Verizon EVDO Modem

So you made the decision, took the plunge, and got yourself a Sprint or Verizon EVDO aircard - now what?

Before you can pop the modem into your computer or 3G router and start surfing the web, you'll need to activate your new aircard. Of course, if you order your device and service from 3Gstore.com, we'll take care of that step for you*, but if you purchased your device elsewhere or simply prefer to take care of it yourself, you can follow these easy instructions to activate your aircard in your PC, Mac, or Cradlepoint router (select devices only) and be enjoying mobile broadband in no time!

Activating your Verizon modem with VZ Access Manager:

In order to activate your Verizon modem in your PC or Mac computer, you'll first need to install the VZ Access Manager connection software. Depending on your aircard, you may have received a CD-ROM with the software or it may be built in to the device itself, but you can always download the latest version at VZAM.net.

To activate your modem, open VZ Access Manager and select "Activation" from the "Options" menu on a PC or "Run Setup Assistant" on a Mac but do NOT connect your modem yet. This will open the activation wizard (note: these screenshots were taken on a PC computer, but the VZAM activation wizard for the Mac works in the same manner):

VZAM activation wizard

Click "next" to start the activation. The subsequent screen will ask you whether you'd like VZAM to detect WiFi and WWAN devices or just WWAN devices. Select the "detect WWAN devices only" option and click "next":

VZAM activation screen 2

The next screen asks you to indicate which type of device VZAM should be detecting. If you are tethering a phone or PDA you will select the "Data Cable" option, but for aircards of any format you will select "PC Card, ExpressCard, or USB Modem" and click "next":

VZAM activation screen 3

At this point VZAM will instruct you to connect your device. Do so and click "next" to allow VZAM to find the connected device:

After a few moments, a "finished" screen will appear. Your device has now been activated! Leave the "Run VZ AccessManager at Setup" option UN-checked (if you check this box, VZAM will open every time you turn on your computer) and click "finished":

After you've clicked "finish", VZAM will open and you can click "connect" to connect to the web. Enjoy!

Activating your Sprint modem with Sprint SmartView:

In order to activate your Sprint modem in your PC or Mac computer, you'll first need to install the SmartView connection software. Depending on your aircard, you may have received a CD-ROM with the software or it may be built in to the device itself, but you can always download the latest version at http://www.sprint.com/downloads.

To activate your modem, connect the device and open SmartView. Select "Activate Device" from the "Tools" menu (this is the same on both a PC and Mac). This will open the activation wizard (note: these screenshots were taken on a PC computer, but the SmartView activation wizard for the Mac works in the same manner).

The first screen will instruct you to contact Sprint for your activation information (if your ordered from 3Gstore, this information was provided to you in an email):

Once you have the information from Sprint, click "next" to begin the activation process.

The subsequent screen will ask you to enter your "Activation Code". Enter this code and click "next":

smartview activation screen 2

After succesfully entering your activation code, you will be asked to enter the phone number of the modem and a second code called the MSID. Enter these and click "next":

smartview activation screen 3

SmartView will now ask you to confirm that the numbers you entered are correct. Double-check your notes (or if you are still on the phone with Sprint you can confirm with the rep) and if everything is correct, click "yes":

smartview activation screen 4

You will now be taken to a screen confirming that your activation is in progress. Until the activation is completed, you will not be able to use the device, so it is important to be patient and leave the activation wizard open until SmartView indicates that the activation is complete!

Once activation is complete, you'll be able to click "finish" and the wizard will close. At that point, you'll be able to connect using SmartView and surf the web!

Activating your Sprint or Verizon modem in a Cradlepoint router:

A select group of devices can be activated directly in your Cradlepoint router. ONLY the following devices can be activated this way (all others will need to be activated in a computer with either VZ Access Manager or SmartView): Novatel U720, Novatel U727, Novatel U760, Sierra 595U, Sierra Compass 597, Sierra 598U, Novatel V640/V740, and Novatel EX720.

To activate one of the abovementioned aircards in your Cradlepoint router, first connect your modem to the router and then connect your computer to the router either via WiFi or ethernet cable and access the Cradlepoint web administration by typing "192.168.0.1" into the address bar of your web browser and hitting "enter". This will bring you to the Cradlepoint administrator login page. Log in by entering the password, which by default is the last six (6) characters of the MAC address of the router (the router's MAC address should be clearly labeled on the underside of your router as well as on the box).

Once you're logged in to the administration panel, select the "MODEM" tab from the top of the page, then select "UPDATE" from the links on the left:

CP activation screen 1

Click "Initiate" to start the activation process. A notification will appear letting you know that activation may take a few moments. Click "OK":

CP activation screen 2

While the router is activating the device, you'll see a status screen indicating the current state. Do NOT disrupt the activation process while it is in progress!

CP activation screen 3

After a couple minutes, a pop-up notification indicating the success of the activation will appear:

CP activation screen 4
That's it! Your device is now active and you should be able to surf the web via your router.

Problems Activating your Sprint or Verizon Modem?

Following the above instructions yields successful results for 99.999% of users, but every once people run into problems. Here are a couple of the most common errors people see when trying to activate their EVDO modem - and how to fix them!

Not in a coverage area: In order to activate your modem, the device needs to communicate with Verizon or Sprint. If you are not in a 1xRTT or EVDO coverage area, you will not be able to activate your device. You'll need to move to an area with coverage (you can check coverage here: http://3Gstore.com/coverage) to complete the activation.

Data Entry Error: It is rare, but every so often during setup of an account Verizon or Sprint enters the wrong ESN number on the account. When going through the activation process the ESN of the connected device is compared to the ESN on the account and if they do not match, the device will not activate! If you're having activation problems, check to make sure the ESN that Verizon or Sprint has on file matches your actual ESN. Find your ESN (the ESN on an aircard is typically on the back/bottom of the device and appears as an 11 digit number or 9-digit HEX that includes numbers and letters from A-F) and call Sprint at 888-211-4727 or Verizon at (800) 922-0204 to make sure the ESN on the account matches the ESN on your card.

*When you order your Sprint or Verizon modem from 3Gstore, your device will come pre-activated and ready to use in your computer or directly in a 3G router! Once you receive your aircard, you can use it with VZAM or SmartView, directly in a router, or natively without any connection manager software (select devices only) without having to do any of the above steps - it's just one of many things that sets 3Gstore apart from other retailers.
