HP to Acquire Palm for $1.2 Billion

HP to Acquire Palm for $1.2 Billion

For quite some time Palm has been trying to compete with other smartphones such as the iPhone, Android devices, Blackberry, and even Windows Mobile. Even with their newly designed webOS their devices still only account for 6% of the smartphone market. There has been a lot of speculation that Palm would be bought by another company. HTC seemed like the most likely buyer as they would be able to develop the hardware and re-design the webOS, as they often add their own custom user interface to their current Android, Windows Mobile and 3G / EVDO devices.

Today Palm has been acquired by Hewlett-Packard for $1.2 billion, the companies announced this afternoon. This buyout means that HP will now be a significant contender in the smartphone market, as they plan to continue to develop & improve the webOS for their future line-up of smartphones. CEO Jon Rubinstein stated that “HP’s longstanding culture of innovation, scale and global operating resources make it the perfect partner to rapidly accelerate the growth of webOS.”

Do you think that HP will be able to keep webOS alive, or is it still on its last leg against the competition? Post your feedback on HP Acquiring Palm on
