Now that the WiFi-only version of the iPad has been out for a couple of weeks, many users are quickly realizing that the portable iPad isn't nearly as useful when you don't have any WiFi access to browse the web, check email, download apps, or use most of the apps which require internet access. While the 3G-capable versions of the iPad are now available as well, unfortunately, that's not as great as it might sound. The 3G-capable iPads are locked to AT&T's 3G network, and it's no secret that AT&T's 3G network coverage and performance pales in comparison to Sprint's or Verizon's respective network. In fact, many Apple fans are already aware of just how bad AT&T's network is, as iPhone users are constantly complaining about dropped calls and spotty 3G coverage (even folks who are in AT&T 3G areas have problems with the performance, since AT&T's towers are so overloaded!). And of course, even if you don't mind AT&T's network, you'll have to pay $30/month for AT&T's data plan for the 3G-capable iPads - and that $30/month plan will only provide internet access to the iPad it's associated with. Read more about the downsides to the 3G-enabled iPad.

Despite what AT&T's commercials would like you to believe, there's no denying the fact that AT&T's 3G network is available in only a fraction of the places Verizon has coverage (not to mention AT&T's performance issues within those covered areas!)

As you can see from the map above, AT&T doesn't cover 80% of the areas that Verizon does, which has many iPad owners looking for a solution that will allow them to use Verizon's 3G network to provide internet connectivity for their iPads almost anywhere they travel to. There are several different options that will get your Apple iPad Online with wireless 3G or 4G service, but the most popular option is Verizon's MiFi 2200.

Verizon's MiFi 2200 is an ultra portable 3G device that allows you to connect up to five devices at a time via WiFi to access the internet anywhere that Verizon 3G coverage is available. It's essentially a tiny modem and router all packed into one unit that you can take with you anywhere. This is one of the many benefits of having a Verizon MiFi, as the iPad 3G data plan can only be used with the iPad - why pay $30/month to have internet connectivity to only your iPad when you can pay just a little more and be able to connect a multitude of WiFi-enabled devices, including your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, laptop computer, Nintendo DS... any WiFi capable device!

Obviously, one of the best things about the iPad is the portability factor, so it's understandable that users don't want to have to lug around a bunch of extra gear just to get their iPad online. When we say that the MiFi is "ultra portable" and "tiny", we aren't exaggerating - the MiFi is about the size of a deck of cards (but even slimmer) and weighs barely 2 ounces. It is small enough to fit in any iPad case right along with your iPad - or even your pocket! Plus, it's battery-powered, so you don't have to worry about wires, plugs, and power sources.

With its ability to provide connectivity to up to 5 devices (instead of just the iPad), super portable form factor, and of course the fact that it uses Verizon's superior 3G network, it's easy to see why the Verizon MiFi has quickly become a must-have for iPad users. However, Verizon's price for their 3G service ($59.99/month for 5GB of data + taxes), and the fact that they require a 2-year contract, has been a dealbreaker for some iPad users who would otherwise love to add a MiFi to their iPad setup.

We've also put together a video demonstrating how easy it is to use the Verizon MiFi with the iPad and other devices. Check it out below!
