HTC EVO 4G FAQ (last updated 7/8/2010)

When can I order the HTC EVO 4G?
The HTC EVO 4G launched June 4th, 2010. Supplies are VERY limited at launch at all Sprint retailers and the phone is currently sold out in most locations, but you can pre-order for one at 3Gstore (visit 3Gstore.com/evo).

How much does it cost?
With a new 2-year contract (or eligible 2-year upgrade), the HTC EVO 4G is $299.99 - $100 mail-in rebate = $199.99.

Can I order it without service?
The HTC EVO 4G will be available without service (for customers who are not eligible for an upgrade and want to do an ESN swap) based on availability. Price is TBD (estimated $449.99).

What plans can the HTC EVO 4G be activated on?
The HTC EVO 4G requires the "Everything Data", "Simply Everything", or "Business Advantage" plan (or the "family share" versions of any of those plans). It CANNOT be used with any other plan! The most affordable plan that is compatible with the HTC EVO would be the Everything Data plan with 450 minutes, which is $69.99/mo (plus you will also need the $10 premium data feature - see below).

Why does it require an extra $10 "premium data" feature? Can that be removed?
The additional $10/month "Premium Data" feature is required regardless of which plan you're on. This required feature provides you with unlimited 3G and 4G access on your phone and CANNOT be removed.

How much does the hotspot feature cost?
The 3G/4G hotspot feature, which allows you to use your EVO as a hotspot for up to 8 devices (similar to the MiFi or Overdrive), is an optional feature and costs $29.99/month.

Can the hotspot feature be turned on and off?
Yes. The hotspot feature is NOT required, and you can turn the feature on and off if desired.

Is usage unlimited with the hotspot feature?
YES! Both 3G and 4G usage is unlimited while using the hotspot feature. This is a MAJOR "plus" - remember, with the MiFi and Overdrive, 3G usage is limited to 5GB/month with overage charges thereafter. However, off-network roaming is limited to 300MB/month (i.e. if you use the hotspot feature in a rural area where Sprint does not have native coverage but has a roaming agreement with another provider). NOTE: as of 10/2/11, the mobile hotspot feature no longer provides unlimited data :(

Can I talk on the phone while I'm using the hotspot feature?
If you are using the hotspot feature in 4G mode, YES - you can talk on the phone and use the 4G network at the same time. If you are connected to the 3G network, NO - you cannot talk on the phone and use Sprint's 3G network simultaneously.

Is it tether-capable?
No, the HTC EVO 4G is not compatible with Sprint's traditional phone-as-modem/tethering feature. However, it does have the hotspot feature option for $29.99/mo, which allows you to create a WiFi network for up to 8 devices.

Can I use the hotspot feature with a non-WiFi device (for example, to tether to a desktop computer)?
You can tether the EVO to a Windows computer while the hotspot feature is on to provide internet access to that computer, but that will disable the WiFi for other devices. You CANNOT tether it to a Mac. Instead of tethering, you may want to consider the Pepwave Surf Mini (which picks up the WiFi from the EVO and has an ethernet port on it that you can use to connect to a desktop computer, gaming console, etc); you could also add a WiFi adapter to your desktop compuer so that it could pick up the WiFi.

Is the hotspot secure?
Yes - the hotspot can be set up as open or secure with a password of your choice.

What kind of USB connection does it have?
Micro USB

Where is 4G available? Where is 3G available?
Sprint's 3G network is widely available in many areas across the US. Sprint's 4G network is newer and is currently available in approximately 30 cities in the US, and launching in more cities every quarter. You can check your coverage at 3Gstore.com/coverage.

What if I'm not in a 3G or 4G area?
The HTC EVO can be used in non-3G/4G areas, but the multimedia experience will obviously suffer. However, when you travel to a 3G or 4G area, the phone will automatically connect to the best available network.

Does it work well with Mac computers?
The EVO does not have official OS X support, making it more difficult to sync with a Mac than with a Windows computer. However, there is a free software available for OS X called DoubleTwist that allows you to sync your music library and Amazon MP3s between your Mac and your EVO, so Mac users aren't completely out of luck. Using Google Apps and Gmail to store your files is another good solution - you can log into your Google account and access your files from the EVO just like you can from any computer. (Of course, the hotspot feature works fine with any Mac with wireless capabilities)

Does it have a camera?
Yes - the EVO has 2 cameras for photos and videos, a rear-facing 8MP camera and a front-facing 1.3MP camera.

Does it have an antenna port to boost the signal?
No. However, other signal boosting options (like the Wilson Sleek) are available to improve the 2G and 3G signal (no amplifiers are currently available to boost 4G signal).

Can it run multiple apps at once?
Yes!

How long does the battery last?
In our tests, the EVO averaged about 6-8 hours. With the hotspot feature turned on or with otherwise especially heavy use, the battery life will be lower. If you need extra battery life, we recommend an external battery or car charger.

What kind of accessories are available for the HTC EVO 4G?
At launch, 3Gstore has the following accessories for the EVO:
