iPhone Tethering: Incompatible with Routers and You'll Lose Your Unlimited Status!

On June 7th 2010, AT&T announced tethering plans for the iPhone, meaning you can now use your iPhone as a modem to provide internet access to a computer (at an additional charge, of course). This was a much-anticipated feature, but we would NOT recommend activating it in most cases.

AT&T has confirmed that adding the tethering plan (which costs $20/month) to your phone will automatically require you to switch your data plan to the 2GB/month plan. This is a MAJOR deal for those who currently are grandfathered in under the unlimited data plan! If you add the tethering feature to your plan, you will lose your unlimited data plan for your iPhone since AT&T no longer offers unlimited data - and you can't get the unlimited plan back once it's gone (even if you turn the tethering feature off in the future).

Additionally, keep in mind that iPhone tethering will only work when connected directly to a computer via USB. There has been a lot of discussion about whether the iPhone would work with a Cradlepoint router (so that you could share the connection with multiple computers/devices), but unfortunately we have confirmed that the iPhone is absolutely NOT supported by any Cradlepoint router at this time.

AT&T's iPhone tethering plan simply doesn't make sense for most users, as you will lose your unlimited data on your phone and won't even have the option of sharing the connection with other devices via a router. If you have an iPhone and were considering using the tethering feature, you may want to take a look at other options for temporary or no-contract mobile broadband that are more flexible, won't effect your iPhone's unlimited plan, and utilize the Sprint or Verizon networks (which offer far better coverage than AT&T).
