Samsung Epic 4G FAQ (last updated 9/15/2010)

When can I order the Samsung Epic 4G?
The Epic 4G is now available! Click here to order for the Epic from 3Gstore.

How much does it cost?
With a new 2-year contract (or eligible 2-year upgrade), the Samsung Epic 4G is $349.99 - $100 mail-in rebate = $249.99.

Can I order it without service?
The Samsung Epic 4G will be available without service (for customers who are not eligible for an upgrade and want to do an ESN swap) sometime after launch, based on availability. Price is TBD.

What plans can the Samsung Epic 4G be activated on?
The Epic 4G requires the "Everything Data", "Simply Everything", or "Business Advantage" plan (or the "family share" versions of any of those plans). It CANNOT be used with any other plan! The most affordable plan that is compatible with the HTC EVO would be the Everything Data plan with 450 minutes, which is $69.99/mo (plus you will also need the $10 premium data feature - see below).

Why does it require an extra $10 "premium data" feature? Can that be removed?
The additional $10/month "Premium Data" feature is required regardless of which plan you're on. This required feature provides you with unlimited 3G and 4G access on your phone and CANNOT be removed.

How much does the hotspot feature cost?
The 3G/4G hotspot feature, which allows you to use your Epic as a hotspot for up to 5 devices (similar to the MiFi or Overdrive), is an optional feature and costs $29.99/month.

Can the hotspot feature be turned on and off?
Yes. The hotspot feature is NOT required, and you can turn the feature on and off if desired.

Is usage unlimited with the hotspot feature?
YES! Both 3G and 4G usage is unlimited while using the hotspot feature. This is a MAJOR "plus" - remember, with the MiFi and Overdrive, 3G usage is limited to 5GB/month with overage charges thereafter. However, off-network roaming is limited to 300MB/month (i.e. if you use the hotspot feature in a rural area where Sprint does not have native coverage but has a roaming agreement with another provider). NOTE: as of 10/2/11, the mobile hotspot feature no longer provides unlimited data :(

Can I talk on the phone while I'm using the hotspot feature?
If you are using the hotspot feature in 4G mode, YES - you can talk on the phone and use the 4G network at the same time. If you are connected to the 3G network, NO - you cannot talk on the phone and use Sprint's 3G network simultaneously.

Can I use the hotspot feature with a non-WiFi device (for example, to tether to a desktop computer)?
Yes - HOWEVER, tethering the Epic directly to a computer does TURN OFF the WiFi (meaning no other computers will be able to connect while it is tethered to one computer).

Is the hotspot secure?
Yes, it comes password-protected by default and uses WPA security.

Does it have a physical QWERTY keyboard?
Yes - the Epic has a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard as well as a virtual keyboard with Swype technology, which allows users to input text faster and more intuitively with one continuous finger motion across the virtual keyboard.

What kind of USB connector does it have?
Micro USB.

Where is 4G available? Where is 3G available?
Sprint's 3G network is widely available in many areas across the US. Sprint's 4G network is newer and is currently available in approximately 30 cities in the US, and launching in more cities every quarter. You can check your coverage at 3Gstore.com/coverage.

What if I'm not in a 3G or 4G area?
The Samsung Epic can be used in non-3G/4G areas, but the multimedia experience will obviously suffer. However, when you travel to a 3G or 4G area, the phone will automatically connect to the best available network.

Will it work well with Mac computers?
Syncing with a Mac computer requires a third party software like Missing Sync.

Does it have a camera?
Yes - the Epic has 2 cameras: a 5 MP camera/camcorder with autofocus, power LED flash and 4x digital zoom for photos and HD video1 (720p) video recording, as well as a front-facing VGA camera for video chat and more.

Does it have an antenna port to boost the signal?
No. However, other signal boosting options (like the Wilson Sleek) are available to improve the 2G and 3G signal (no amplifiers are currently available to boost 4G signal).

Can it run multiple apps at once?
Yes!

How long does the battery last?
We're very impressed with the battery life that we've been getting out of this phone. It's amazing that we can get better performance out of the Epic and still get longer battery life than on the EVO 4G. While it's not possible to give specific battery life times, as each user's experience will differ depending on how you use your phone, we were able to get a full day of use out of the phone and still had a small bit of battery life to spare!

What kind of accessories are available for the Samsung Epic 4G:
At launch, 3Gstore will have the following accessories for the Epic:
