Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go MiFi 2200 Router Compatibility

Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 connected to MBR1200

If you own a Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go MiFi 2200, you're probably already aware that it only allows you to connect up to five devices via WiFi to access the internet connection. In addition to only being able to connect up to 5 devices simultaneously, the MiFi 2200 also has a very limited WiFi range of 30 feet which really only covers one room with a decent signal. While these limitations aren't really an issue while you're on the go, they can present a problem in a home or office environment  if you have more than 5 devices that you want to have connected to your network such as multiple computers, wireless printers, gaming consoles, media centers, smartphones, or even an iPad. You may constantly find yourself disconnecting one device so that you can connect a different device or finding that your wireless printer is just out of reach due to the MiFi's limited WiFi range. With a 3G/4G router you can connect your MiFi via USB to allow up to 64 WiFi devices to be connected simultaneously, connect devices that aren't WiFi capable via ethernet cable, and extend WiFi range up to 150 feet depending on the model of the router.

While there aren't any 3G routers that are officially compatible with the Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200, in our testing the Virgin Mobile MiFi connected successfully with the following routers:

Cradlepoint MBR900 with firmware version 1.7.2
Cradlepoint MBR1000 with firmware version 1.7.2
Cradlepoint MBR1200 with firmware version 1.7.2
Cradlepoint CTR500 with firmware version 1.7.2
Cradlepoint CTR350 with firmware version 2.5.4
Cradlepoint PHS300 with firmware version 2.5.4
NexAira BC2 with firmware version AG1.2.3.20

Because the Virgin Mobile version of the MiFi 2200 isn't officially supported by Cradlepoint, we cannot guarantee compatibility, nor can we provide full technical support for a router used with an unsupported device (and Cradlepoint will not provide technical support for unsupported devices). However, 3Gstore does offer a 14-day return policy on Cradlepoint routers and if you are unable to tether your phone successfully you can return the router for a full refund (less shipping).

In our testing, we needed to upgrade our Cradlepoint routers to the latest firmware version before the Virgin Mobile version of the MiFi 2200 would connect. If you are buying your router from 3Gstore, we can perform the necessary firmware upgrade before shipping for an additional $15 so that it is ready to go out of the box when you receive it - simply select the firmware upgrade option on the router's product page before adding it to your cart. If you prefer, you can perform the firmware upgrade yourself after you receive the router, using 3Gstore's exclusive 3G/4G Router Support CD (included free with every Cradlepoint router from 3Gstore!).

Interested in a router for your Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 but not sure which one is right for you? For most users, the MBR1000 (shown with the MiFi 2200 above) is a great choice - it provides excellent WiFi range (up to 150 feet indoors) as well as 4 ethernet ports for wired connections. If you're not sure which router is going to meet your specific needs the best, check out our guide: Which 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Router Is Best For Me?

In addition to improving WiFi range and providing ethernet ports, using a router with your MiFi 2200 gives you more advanced controls over your network. You can setup traffic shaping (QOS) to give certain devices priority bandwidth such as a VOIP phone, gaming console, or to make sure your computer gets priority over anyone else who uses your internet connection. With a Cradlepoint router you can also setup OpenDNS to speed up your web browsing experience, block phishing fraud & scams, and also setup free web filtering if you have kids.

The most cost-effective option for gamers or users who only need to provide a single ethernet connection to a device that doesn't have WiFi should take a look at the CTR350. It's the most affordable router available, provides one ethernet port, and a WiFi range of up to 80 feet indoors.
