Tip of the Week #73: Configure Pantech UML290 for 3G/4G Global (Auto-Switching) Use

NOTE: This tip is for MBR/CBA/CTR500 users running firmware 1.8.1. If you are using the UML290 in the Cradlepoint CTR35 or Nexaira BC2 in a 3G area, you need to lock the modem to 3G mode - read Tip #72 for instructions.

If you were an "early adopter" and utilized Cradlepoint's beta firmware to use your Verizon Pantech UML290 3G/4G modem with a router, you are likely familiar with the Pantech Utility. In order to use the UML290 in a 3G area in a router with the beta firmware installed, users had to lock their modems to 3G mode - "global" (AKA "auto") mode, where the modem switches back and forth between 3G and 4G automatically depending on which network is available, was not supported with the beta firmware.

Now Cradlepoint has released firmware 1.8.1 for the MBR1200, MBR1000, MBR900, CTR500, CBA250, CBA750, and MBR800 routers, which solves that problem and allows users to select 3G, 4G, or auto mode from within the router admin. If you previously locked your UML290 into 3G mode and have now upgraded your router to firmware 1.8.1 (not sure how to upgrade your firmware? Read our first Tip of the Week), you will need to change the configuration on your UML290 to "auto" mode so that you can use the modem in 3G only, LTE only, or auto (switching) mode.

Configure your Pantech UML290 for Auto/Global use:

Step 1: Download the Pantech Modem Utility by following the instructions at this link: Download Pantech Modem Utility (WINDOWS ONLY)

Step 2: Install the Pantech Modem Configuration Tool on a Windows computer

Step 3: With your UML290 inserted into your computer but NOT connected to the network, launch the Pantech Modem Application

Step 4: Click the "read" button - this will read the current settings of your Pantech UML290.

Step 5: Under "Pref_mode", check the "CDMA/HDR/LTE Only" option. In the "HDR Service Configuration" section, check the "eHRPD" option. Your settings should look like the below sample:

Step 6: Click on the "Write" button to save the settings.

Once the "write" is complete, you can remove the modem from your computer and use it in your Cradlepoint router router running firmware 1.8.1.
