Verizon Wireless: ‘Lessons learned’ on LTE network outage

Verizon Wireless executive director of LTE spoke today at the Ericsson's Business Innovation Forum in Silicon Valley, where they got several questions about Verizon's big LTE network outage that occurred in April. This 24 hour outage left hundreds of thousands of customers unable to access 4G LTE and even their older 3G EVDO network. Higgins wouldn't give any specific details on what caused the outage, but he did say that the issue was fixed and they've taken steps to ensure it won't happen again.

Higgins also said "We’re going to make some adjustments, and some of those adjustments have already been made…It was an important issue. We worked through them. Our vendors were very responsive.” Ericsson's North America VP of strategy and market development Arun Bhikshesvaran mentioned this problem wasn't related to Ericsson directly. They supply the radio access network and elements of the evolved packet core for Verizon's LTE deployment, but because this effected everyone, rather than a single market, the problem was probably further up in the network.
