AT&T Defines Meaning of 'Unlimited' Data Plan

After AT&T was recently sued by a customer unhappy about their unlimited account being throttled, AT&T now speaks out about unlimited data. According to AT&T, the reduced speeds will only apply to certain unlimited smartphone customers that use significantly higher data than those on newer tiered plans. "For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans," AT&T said in a statement.

Customers will receive a text alert when usage approaches 3GB within a single billing period and after the threshold is hit data with be throttled for the remainder of the month. "If you have a 4G LTE smartphone and still have an unlimited data plan, the same process applies at 5 GB of data usage, instead of 3 GB," AT&T said. They insist that this policy change won't affect 95 percent of their customer base and will only impact those that abuse their 'unlimited' data plans.
