Clearwire's LTE Rollout Coming to NYC, SF, Seattle & Chicago

CLEAR and Sprint have announced that they are throwing in the towel on their 4G WiMAX network (still will work in limited areas that have it - BUT there will be NO NEW WiMAX cities ever), but instead are going to convert their spectrum over from WiMAX to LTE.  Actually, it is called TDD-LTE, which is a new standard of LTE that can run on the WiMAX frequency of 2600MHZ.

The initial rollout schedule will include New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles , Seattle and Chicago during the first part of 2013.

Sprint (who owns 51% of CLEAR) has already announced 4G Devices that support both WiMAX and LTE.  It is unclear if running LTE on the high frequency will give CLEAR an advantage or disadvantage.  Currently, WiMAX doesn't offer very good building penetration compared to the 700Mhz band that Verizon and AT&T are using.

Either way, choice is good and this is a good thing as 4G LTE expands.
