FCC Announces Plan to Free Up 195MHz of Spectrum for WiFi on 5GHz Band

Amidst all the other exciting news and upcoming products announced at CES in Las Vegas this week was an announcement from Julius Genachowski that could make a big impact on the future of WiFi availability in the US. Genachowski announced plans to free up 195MHz of spectrum on the 5GHz WiFi band; this would be the largest expansion of WiFi spectrum since 2003.

The 5GHz WiFi band is currently primarily used by federal agencies, but Genachowski noted that he is confident that the FCC will be able to work with the government to free up the spectrum for unlicensed public use. This expansion has the potential to boost WiFi performance and ease congestion in crowded public areas like airports, coffee shops, etc.
