Simple WiFi as WAN Setup with the Pepwave Surf SOHO

WiFi as WAN (WAW) means that a router or bridge can pick up a WiFi signal from an external source (for example, campground WiFi at an RV park, free WiFi at McDonald's, or even the hotspot feature from a smartphone like the iPhone or Android Phone) and create a new secure, private network from it. In other words, a router or bridge is using the external WiFi network as the internet source instead of utilizing a wired connection like cable or DSL or a cellular connection like a 3G or 4G USB modem.

The Pepwave Surf SOHO is no slouch when it comes to making WiFi as WAN connections. With its powerful built in WiFi antennas, the average range of this router is about 200 feet indoors. Using its optional external WiFi antennas, you can effectively double that range. For an RVer who is too far from the main network at a campground, the SOHO can help you pick up that signal from farther away, and then create a secure private network for all of your devices. A home owner may need a way to extend an existing wireless signal into a basement where the signal doesn't currently reach. Get online with a cellular hotspot but its range is far too small? WiFi as WAN will let you repeat that signal over much greater distances.

The video below walks though just how easy the setup of a WiFi WAN connection can be when using a router like the Surf SOHO.
