Sierra Wireless AirLink Raven RV50

New from Sierra Wireless and now available at 3Gstore, the Raven RV50 is a powerful 4G LTE industrial gateway. Industrial grade and LTE capability is nothing new for Sierra hardware, but the exceptionally low power draw requirements put the RV50 in a whole new category of industrial and M2M solutions.

Jumping right into the main feature of the RV50, let's look at its power consumption, or rather, is lack of power consumption. The RV50 operates at just 900mW while in idle mode, which is comparable to many 2G modems. This means that users who have 2G/3G equipment and are looking to upgrade their deployments to LTE, the RV50 is an easy choice that doesn’t require upgrading the existing power infrastructure. The RV50 is specifically optimized for solar powered applications where a low voltage device is not only desirable, but necessary. The RV50 will then drop from idle to standby mode requiring just 53mW, and it can be triggered on by timers or input from its I/O connections.

Certified as a Class I Div 2 device, the IP64 rated RV50 will stand up to almost any industrial and M2M deployment. Mil spec for shock, vibration, temperature, and humidity protect the RV50 in the field, and a built in power supply protection can save your device in the event of a power surge. Capable of surviving power drops under 5 V, or surges from -600 VDC to 200 VDC, this is suitable for use with compressors, generators, or other volatile electrical environments.

The RV50 also integrates with AirLink Management Service (ALMS) to provide cloud configuration and monitoring of deployed devices. ALMS provides a single point to monitor things like device signal strength, location, temperature, voltage, data usage, and more. A dashboard screen gives the end user an up-to-date view of an entire deployment from anywhere in the world.

The RV50 has a single ethernet port, USB, and serial connectivity. Three antenna ports (2 Cellular, 1 GPS) round out antenna support, and configurable I/O through the power cable provides communication based on externally connected equipment. The RV50 also has dual SIM slots and carries all major carrier software on board. A quick restart of the device lets you switch providers without the need for new hardware. If you deploy on Verizon but switch to AT&T, or find that a carrier signal isn’t good for one location, just reboot the device on the new carrier firmware and you are set. A standard 3 year warranty with an optional 2 year extension should be peace of mind when it comes to large deployments or long term field use.

3Gstore has been testing an RV50 in house for the last few weeks, and we’ve found it to be extremely reliable. In our testing we primarily ran Verizon, however we made a few switches to AT&T by simply rebooting the device. Each time the RV50 rebooted, it connected right away. Some other routers require you to flash the firmware manually when switching carriers which is a complicated process, so the RV50 was a welcome change. Overall we were impressed with the device and its performance, and we are happy to add it to 3Gstore.
